LITTLE TURKEY TALKER: GOBBLES & GAMES

Say hello to one of the most amazing birds in the whole forest: the WILD TURKEY! Look at that picture — the boy turkey (called a GOBBLER or a TOM) puffs up his feathers and spreads his tail like a giant fan. He struts around like he's saying 'Look at me! Look at me!' The girl turkeys (called HENS) watch and pretend not to be impressed.

Wild turkeys are nothing like the ones on farms. They're super fast runners, they can FLY (surprise!), and at night they flap way up into big trees to sleep — that's called ROOSTING. A turkey sleeping in a tree is safe from foxes and coyotes all night long.

And here's their superpower: turkey EYES. A turkey can see almost all the way around itself without turning its head, and it spots the tiniest wiggle from far, far away. Hunters say turkeys see 'everything, always.' Remember that superpower — it's going to matter in your stillness lessons!

Turkeys are big talkers! The most famous sound is the GOBBLE — that wobbly 'gobble-obble-obble!' the toms shout in spring. But turkeys have lots more words: soft YELPS that mean 'over here, friends!', little CLUCKS that mean 'all is well,' and fast CUTTING sounds when a hen is excited.

Look at the picture: those funny wooden things are TURKEY CALLS — special instruments hunters use to speak turkey! The box call scrapes out a yelp when you slide its lid. The pot call makes turkey sounds when you drag a little stick across it. Turkey hunters practice their calls all year, like learning a musical instrument.

Here's how the magic works: the hunter hides super still and makes hen sounds — 'yelp, yelp, yelp!' A gobbler far away hears it and thinks 'A friend! I'll go say hi!' and comes strutting in closer and closer. The hunter doesn't chase the turkey — the calling brings the turkey to THEM. Patience and talking beat chasing, every time!
