STEP 1

START WITH THE FOUR RULES — LONG BEFORE THE FIRST HUNT

Every safe hunter runs on 4 rules, remembered as TAB-K: Treat every firearm as loaded, Always point the muzzle in a safe direction, Be sure of your target and beyond, and Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.

Kids as young as 5 can learn these as habits before they ever touch a firearm. Say them out loud together, quiz them at dinner, and hang them where your child sees them every day — our free Four Rules poster is made for exactly that.

STEP 2

MATCH THE TRAINING TO YOUR CHILD'S AGE

Ages 5–8 (Trailblazers): Focus on habits and vocabulary. Muzzle awareness, "stop and ask", and staying beside an adult. Short, story-driven lessons work best.

Ages 9–12 (Scouts): Add real decision-making — target identification, safe zones of fire, crossing fences, and what to do when something feels wrong.

Ages 13–17 (Pathfinders): Build independence: tree stand protocol, shot placement ethics, navigation, first aid, and planning a hunt from start to finish.

STEP 3

PRACTICE AT HOME BEFORE YOU EVER LEAVE THE DRIVEWAY

Safety becomes automatic through repetition, not lectures. Run 1 short drill a week: carry positions across the yard, "safe direction" checks around corners, and target ID calls from the porch.

STEP 4

PLAN THE FIRST HUNT AROUND LEARNING, NOT HARVESTING

The best first hunts are short, comfortable, and low-pressure. Pick mild weather, sit where you can whisper together, and let your child call out what they see. A first hunt where nothing is harvested but every rule was followed is a complete success.

Talk through the plan on the walk in: where you're going, what a safe shot looks like today, and the words either of you can say to stop everything instantly.
