THE CLUE TRAIL: TRAIL DETECTIVE TRACKING

Did you know hunters are detectives? It's true! One of a hunter's most important jobs is following clues on the ground to find animals — just like a detective follows clues to solve a mystery. This special skill is called tracking.

Here's why it matters so much: hunters make a big promise. If a hunter takes an animal, they promise to find it, take care of it, and never ever waste it. Keeping that promise takes real detective skills — sharp eyes, a patient heart, and lots of practice.

In this course, you and your grown-up will learn to read animal footprints, spot tiny clues most people walk right past, play the waiting game like a pro, and follow a trail from start to finish. Grab your detective eyes — the woods are full of mysteries!

When something exciting happens in the woods, what does everybody want to do? Jump up and run! But a trail detective does the opposite: FREEZE. Stand super still, keep your eyes open wide, and watch everything.

While you're frozen, your brain gets to work like a camera. Where was the animal standing? Which way did it run? What was the last thing it ran past — a big rock? A funny bent tree? Detectives pick a landmark, something easy to remember, so they never forget the spot.

Your ears are detectives too! After an animal disappears, keep listening. Crunching leaves getting quieter and quieter? It's still moving away. Sounds that stop quickly? It might be resting close by. Eyes watch, ears listen, brain remembers — that's the freeze!
