FREE LESSON 1

LOOK FIRST, ALWAYS

Look First, Always

Hunters have one super important job before anything else: knowing EXACTLY what they are looking at. Not guessing. Not 'pretty sure.' Knowing for real. That's called identifying, and it's the very first skill every hunter learns.

Here's the big rule: if you're not 100% sure what an animal is, the answer is always 'wait and watch.' A real hunter would rather let an animal walk away than ever, ever guess. Letting one go costs nothing you'll see another one tomorrow!

In this course, you and your grown-up are going to become expert lookouts. You'll learn how to spot the clues that tell you what an animal really is, why sounds and shadows can trick your eyes, and how to play a fun spotting game outside together.

  • Know for REAL what you're looking at — never guess
  • Not 100% sure? Then wait and watch
  • Letting an animal go costs nothing at all

FIELD NOTE · Tell your grown-up the lookout rule in your own words: 'If I'm not 100% sure, I wait and watch.'

FREE LESSON 2

ANIMAL CLUES

Animal Clues

Every animal wears its own special 'uniform' clues that tell you who it is! A whitetail deer has a reddish-brown coat, a white patch on its throat, and a fluffy tail that flips up white like a flag when it runs. Those clues are called field marks.

Here's the trick: you can only read the clues if you can see the WHOLE animal. A little patch of brown fur behind a bush? That's not enough clues! It could be a deer... or a dog, or a squirrel, or even a person's jacket. The animal has to show you its whole self.

Your brain loves to play fill-in-the-blank. If you're hoping to see a deer, your brain might turn any brown blob into one! That's why great lookouts always say: 'Show me the whole animal, and show me the clues.'

  • Field marks are an animal's special clues — like its uniform
  • You need to see the WHOLE animal to read the clues
  • Brains play fill-in-the-blank — don't let yours trick you

FIELD NOTE · With your grown-up, learn three clues for one animal that lives near you — then say them from memory at dinner!
