FREE LESSON 1

THINKING IN THREE DIMENSIONS

Thinking in Three Dimensions

Beginner hunters aim at a spot on an animal's side. Advanced hunters aim at an organ inside a three-dimensional body and understand that the projectile's path through that body is what matters, not the point where it enters. The heart-lung complex is a volume, roughly a ten-inch sphere sitting low in the chest between and just behind the front shoulders.

This changes how you think about every angle. On a true broadside, entry point and internal path line up perfectly. But rotate the animal fifteen degrees and the correct entry point shifts you must now aim so the internal path crosses the vital volume, which may mean holding forward or back of the classic 'behind the shoulder' spot. Elevation adds a third dimension: from a tree stand, a shot must enter higher to angle down through the lungs, and a steep downward angle shrinks the effective vital zone dramatically.

The discipline this creates: before any shot, you visualize the exit point. If you cannot confidently name where the projectile will exit the animal's body, you do not understand the angle well enough to shoot. That single habit visualize the exit is the mark of a hunter who has graduated from aiming at pictures to understanding anatomy.

  • The vital zone is a 3D volume — the internal path matters, not just the entry point
  • Angle and elevation shift the correct entry point and shrink the effective zone
  • If you can't visualize the exit point, you don't understand the shot — pass

FIELD NOTE · With your mentor, use a cardboard box marked with a 'vital sphere' inside. View it from different angles and heights and mark where a shot must enter to cross the sphere. Check by running a dowel through.

TERMINAL PERFORMANCE: WHAT HAPPENS AFTER IMPACT

Terminal Performance: What Happens After Impact

An ethical shot works by disrupting the function of the heart and lungs dropping blood pressure and oxygen delivery so quickly that the animal loses consciousness within seconds. A double-lung shot is the most reliable mechanism in hunting: both lungs collapse and the animal typically travels less than a hundred yards. A heart shot is equally fatal but can produce a longer, adrenaline-fueled run.

Understanding what defeats this mechanism is just as important. Heavy bone the shoulder joint, the spine can deflect or absorb a projectile before it reaches vitals. A marginal hit in the liver or paunch is fatal but slow, turning a clean hunt into an hours-long recovery and real suffering. This is why quartering-toward shots fail: the geometry routes the projectile through the strongest bone or the wrong organs.

Your cartridge and load matter here too. Every hunter should know their projectile's behavior: expansion, penetration depth, and the minimum energy their load needs to reliably reach the vitals of the game they hunt. This isn't trivia it's the physical basis for range limits. A load that performs perfectly at 100 yards may lack the energy for ethical performance at 300. Know your load's honest window, and stay inside it.

  • Double-lung shots are the most reliable mechanism — rapid, certain, short recovery
  • Heavy bone and marginal organ hits defeat the mechanism — geometry decides
  • Know your load's terminal performance window and never shoot outside it

FIELD NOTE · Research your hunting cartridge with your mentor: its energy at 100, 200, and 300 yards, and the accepted minimum for your game species. Write your load's honest maximum ethical distance in your log.
