FREE LESSON 1

STAY CLOSE, LITTLE EXPLORER

Stay Close, Little Explorer

The woods are big and wonderful and the number one rule for young explorers is simple: stay where you can see your grown-up, and where your grown-up can see you. That's called staying in the 'seeing circle.'

Sometimes the woods try to trick you! A pretty butterfly, a cool rock, a funny squirrel they can lead your feet away one step at a time without you noticing. Smart explorers look up every few steps and ask, 'Can I still see my grown-up?'

In this course, you'll learn trail-finder tricks: remembering landmarks, reading the sky, and the most important lesson of all exactly what to do if you ever get lost. Let's hit the trail!

  • Stay in the seeing circle — you see them, they see you
  • Butterflies and squirrels can trick your feet away, one step at a time
  • Look up every few steps and check for your grown-up

FIELD NOTE · On your next walk, play the seeing circle game: every time your grown-up says 'circle check!', point to them as fast as you can.

LANDMARK MEMORY GAMES

Landmark Memory Games

A landmark is something big and special that's easy to remember like a giant twisted tree, a rock shaped like a turtle, or a creek that giggles over stones. Trail finders collect landmarks in their memory like treasure!

Look at the picture: can you spot the lone tree on the little hill? The sparkly creek? The big rocky cliff far away? Those are perfect landmarks because you can't miss them.

Here's the trail-finder trick: when you walk somewhere, turn around and look BACKWARD sometimes. The trail looks different going home! Saying landmarks out loud helps too: 'turtle rock... giggle creek... twisty tree.' Now the trail lives in your memory.

  • Landmarks are big, special things that are easy to remember
  • Turn around and look backward — the trail looks different going home
  • Say your landmarks out loud to keep them in your memory

FIELD NOTE · On a family walk, find three landmarks and give them silly names together. On the way back, see who can spot all three first!
