MEET THE BOW: A VERY OLD, VERY SPECIAL TOOL

Meet the Bow: A Very Old, Very Special Tool

Long, long ago before cars, before flashlights, even before books people used bows and arrows to find food for their families. That makes the bow one of the oldest tools in the whole world! When you hold a bow, you're holding something people have been learning carefully for thousands of years.

Look at the picture: a bow, arrows with feathers, an arm guard, and a finger protector. Each piece has a job. The bow stores your muscle power. The arrow flies where you point it. The arm guard keeps the string from stinging your arm. Archers take care of their gear like treasure.

Here's the most important thing to remember from day one: a bow and arrow is a TOOL, not a toy. Tools can do wonderful things when a grown-up shows you how and they must always be used with a grown-up right beside you. That's the Little Archer's first promise.

  • The bow is one of the oldest tools people have ever used
  • Every piece of archery gear has a special job
  • A bow is a tool, not a toy — always use it with a grown-up

FIELD NOTE · Ask your grown-up to show you each piece of archery gear and tell you its job. Can you remember all their names by tomorrow?

FREE LESSON 2

THE POINTING RULE WORKS FOR ARROWS TOO

The Pointing Rule Works for Arrows Too

Do you remember the pointing rule from your safety lessons? Careful hunters only point at things they want to shoot. Guess what the exact same rule works for bows and arrows! An arrow only ever points at the target. Not at people, not at pets, not at houses. Only the target.

Even before an arrow is on the string, careful archers practice pointing the bow at the ground or the target. That way pointing safe becomes a habit something your hands do all by themselves, like buckling your seatbelt.

And here's a secret grown-up archers know: an arrow is sharp even when it's just sitting in your hand. So we carry arrows with the pointy end down, we never run with arrows, and we keep them in the quiver their special holder until it's our turn to shoot.

  • Arrows only point at the target — never at people or pets
  • Point safe even when practicing, so it becomes a habit
  • Carry arrows point-down, never run with them, keep them in the quiver

FIELD NOTE · Practice the arrow carry with a stick: pointy end down, walking feet only. Show your grown-up your safest carry walk!
